Mary Alice Hayward, Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of the IAEA Administration, was the moderator at this event; she pointed out the value of personal stories shared by women from the nuclear field.
She noted: "I realized that it is the stories from life that inspire each of us even more to defend gender equality. Sometimes our stories tell about the difficult path and hardships that we all face, but the most important thing in them is that every defeat is followed by victory."
Chairman and Managing Director of the Nuclear Safety Commission of Canada (NSCC) Rumina Velshi shared her experience as a student and then a specialist in the nuclear field in Canada and spoke about the changes that have occurred before her eyes over the years.
"When I studied at the Faculty of Engineering, I was treated as an equal. But when I started working, the situation changed," she said and told about her work as an engineer at a nuclear power plant at the very beginning of her career. "The station was built without the expectation that women would ever work on it." In addition, there were no radiation protection clothing suitable for women in size, and women's locker rooms. "Now life in Ontario has changed. There are a lot more women to be seen at a wide variety of levels. At the same time, now we have created conditions that allow women to openly declare that they are not satisfied with something." Marina Belyaeva, Deputy Director of the International Activities Unit and Director of the International Cooperation Department of the Russian State Corporation Rosatom, spoke about what inspired her to choose a career in the nuclear industry, and about her work in such areas as non-proliferation, export control, safeguards implementation and nuclear energy development.
She told me: "When I graduated from high school, I was impressed by the events in the nuclear industry. It was the time of its heyday, and women and men had many opportunities to apply their knowledge. One of the brightest periods of my life was my participation in the creation of the first IAEA fuel bank in the Russian Angarsk. A whole group of specialists worked on the creation of the first international uranium enrichment center in Angarsk and low-enriched uranium reserves, but a significant part of the practical work was done by me and my young colleague."
Coordinator of the mentoring program of the UN Young Generation in the Nuclear Field at the IAEA Amelia Li Zhi Yi shared her achievements in the development and implementation of the first interdepartmental mentoring program at the IAEA. She stated: "The presence of mentors in my life has repeatedly benefited my professional and scientific activities. The interesting thing about this program was that junior Professional staff in all departments could be attached to a senior staff member from a workspace located outside their positions." She also noted that women accounted for 75% of wards and only 25% of mentors in this program and that women should believe that they can become role models. She added: "I would like women not only in senior, but also in junior positions to believe that they can be such examples."
