On March 26, 2024, the Women's Community of Rosatom organized a session "Women in STEM" at the Sirius University of Science and Technology as part of the two-day International Forum ATOMEXPO-2024, one of the largest international events in the nuclear field.
The session was moderated by Alexandra Ryabykh, Co-founder of the Foundation for Support and Development of Women's Initiatives "Association of Women in the Nuclear Industry". "Gender imbalance is formed in secondary school, becomes stronger in high school, and grows in higher education, as few girls enter science and engineering specialties. And negative selection ends in the workplace. The speakers of our session will demonstrate successful role models of women technological leaders, tell us how to overcome stereotypes about girls in science and technology professions and achieve high results in the profession", said Alexandra Ryabykh.
Yulia Uzhakina, Director General of the ANO “Rosatom Corporate Academy”, opened the session with a welcoming speech: "It is very important to share experience and learn how others solve their own development tasks. It's important to be open to what others tell you, what you see, to make the most of it and let it go through you."
The next speaker was Bahire Gül Göktepe, Director of NUTEK Energy Consulting, Technology and Industry Inc., President of WiN Türkiye. Gül spoke about her career track and the programs that helped to realize it: summer schools, community activities, exchange programs and scientific research.
Gulumkan Bekturova, Expert of the Sectoral Policies Department of the Office for the preparation of decisions of the President and Cabinet of Ministers of the Presidential Administration of the Kyrgyz Republic, paid special attention to the fight against stereotypes in the technical industries: "A person, first of all, should have pure thoughts, good intentions and honest deeds, and everything else will come by itself."
Yulia Vrzhesen, Director of the Organizational Development Department of the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom, shared her story of becoming not only a mother, but also a true professional. Yulia is an example that women in the nuclear industry do not have to choose between a career and motherhood.
Minu Singh, Managing Director at Nuvia India Private Limited, wished all young professionals not to be afraid to move forward and strive to be happy.
Anastasia Minina, Vice-Rector for International Affairs of ETU "LETI", spoke about the opportunities for schoolchildren and students that the university and partnership with the Rosatom Women's Community offer:
● support for participation in conferences and scientific research;
● IT-bachelorette parties;
● summer schools and exchange programs for students;
● mentoring sessions together with the Rosatom Women's Community;
● educational projects and programs abroad.
Ekaterina Glebova, Director for Social Projects of Medscan Group of Companies, presented the activities of a volunteer center for foreign students, which allows them to get acquainted with Russian culture and gain professional experience.
Amanda Mbhele, Deputy Head of Africa for Nuclear Project Launch Team, drew attention to the importance of informing students about work opportunities in the nuclear industry, the necessary knowledge and competencies.
Irina Minailo, Head of the Radiation Therapy Laboratory of the Republican Scientific and Practical Center of Oncology and Medical Radiology named after N.N. Aleksandrov, Chief Freelance Radiation Therapy Specialist of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus, emphasized the importance of having teachers and mentors in everyone’s life who help them safely plunge into complex and important fields such as medicine. “Medicine has a woman’s face,” said Irina Minailo.
Vera Upirova, Senior Manager of the Project Office for Education Development and International Cooperation of State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM, spoke about the projects that Rosatom is implementing to popularize STEM professions among girls:
● educational programs of the Rosatom Corporate and Technical Academies;
● partnership programs for universities that popularize education in Russian universities for foreign students;
● the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship Programme;
● partner mentoring sessions with the Rosatom Women's Community.
