The event was attended by more than 30 professionals from different countries, including representatives of international organizations, academia and the private sector from Burkina Faso, Egypt, Morocco, Namibia, Senegal and South Africa.
Key topics of discussion included:
• Nuclear power as a reliable and clean energy source;
• Public acceptability of nuclear technology and the impact of information campaigns on its level;
• The role of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in energy independence and sustainable development;
• Using nuclear power to industrialize Africa and combat climate change.
The webinar was moderated by Heba Elkomey, International Coordinator of CMR Egypt.
Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak, Director of the Division for Africa Technical Cooperation at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), delivered welcoming remarks.
Mona Fouad, PR Manager of the Rosatom Country Office in Egypt, took part in the event on behalf of the Rosatom Women's Community, speaking about public acceptability and its role in promoting the implementation of clean energy. She emphasized the importance of information and educational programs in forming a positive public opinion about nuclear technologies.
Among the speakers were:
• Soheir Korraa, Professor at the Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority and President of WiN Africa, noted the importance of nuclear power in reducing the effects of climate change.
• Yaye Catherine Diop Dieng, Head of Energy Transition Department at the Ministry of Energy, Petroleum and Mines of the Republic of Senegal, presented Senegal's strategy for energy transition and fossil fuel divestment.
• Noxolo Kunene, Senior Manager in Regulatory Bodies of the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation NECSA, spoke about the advantages of small modular reactors over conventional power systems.
• Lassina To, Coordinator of Youth Entrepreneurship and Sustainability, emphasized the role of nuclear technology in job creation and industrial development in Africa.
• Amany Gouda, Lecturer at the Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority, presented innovative developments in nuclear fusion and their prospects.
• Khadija Bendam, Head of Radiation Safety and Security Audit at CNESTEN, reviewed the potential of SMRs to address energy shortages in remote regions.
• Thekla Mutero, Founding President of the Emerging Mining Association of Namibia, spoke about modern safety technologies for mining radioactive materials.
The webinar emphasized the key role of international cooperation in the development of nuclear power, as well as the prospects for using small modular reactors to address energy shortages in remote regions and their role in industrial development.
